The vehicle left the roadway at Wall Street and Main Street, crashing through the fence above the Norwalk River and ending up on its roof in the water, police said. The car fell 55 feet and landed on its roof, with the driver and car submerged in the water at about 1:30 a.m., fire officials said.

Police and fire responders waded into the freezing water and removed the man, the only occupant of the car, who was trapped inside, police said.

The driver was pulled from the water and hoisted above to the roadway with high angle equipment from the Norwalk Fire Department.

He was transported to Norwalk Hospital by Norwalk EMS with serious injuries, police said.

The accident remains under investigation Sunday.

The Hour reported that the 35-year-old male driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when he crashed through the guardrail, with the car landing in the middle of the Norwalk River about 40 feet down from the roadway.
