NORWALK, Conn. – A Norwalk man was charged with driving under the influence after striking a pedestrian on Main Street early Sunday, police said. The pedestrian was given a ticket for being in the roadway, police said.
Police were called to the scene of an accident in front of 58 Main St. at about 2 a.m. Sunday. The driver of the car told police that a man had stepped out into the street, and he was unable to stop before hitting him, according to the police report. Officers believe that the driver was traveling the speed limit at the time of the accident, police said.
The pedestrian suffered cuts and bruises and was taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment. The 26-year-old Norwalk resident was also issued an infraction ona charge of unsafe use of a highway by a pedestrian, according to the police report.
The driver, Jesus Zevallos-Uriarte, 34, of Isaac Street, was unsteady on his feet while talking to officers at the scene and admitted to having “a glass of wine” before driving, according to the police report. He also failed a field sobriety test at the scene, police said. Department of Motor Vehicles records showed that his license was suspended, and he did not have insurance.
Zevallos-Uriarte was charged with driving under the influence and issued tickets for driving without a license and not having insurance. He is due in court Sept. 19.
