Death Of Baby In Stamford Ruled A Homicide Due To Blunt Force Trauma

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Stamford Police have launched a criminal investigation into the death of a 2-month-old New Canaan baby after the State's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner found that Bella Redondo died of blunt force trauma to the head, police said early Wednesday evening.

Stamford Emergency Medical Service responded to Little Bears Beginnings Daycare at 48 Wardwell St. in Stamford at 3:12 p.m. Tuesday on a report of a baby who was having trouble breathing, police said.

"It was evident at this time there was some evidence of head trauma in addition to the breathing issues," Stamford Police said in a statement late Wednesday afternoon.

At Stamford Hospital, doctors "valiantly tried to save Bella but to no avail," police said. At about 6:20 p.m., Bella was pronounced dead and police were notified. 

"This is now being treated as a criminal investigation, and we will be headed up by Chief State's Attorney Richard Colangelo," the police statement said. 

This is the first homicide for the City of Stamford this year. Stamford Police Department offered its condolences to Bella’s family. 

"This is an ongoing investigation and we hope we could assist in bringing closure to the family," police said.

Bella Redondo was born on April 24, 2016, and lived on Locust Avenue in New Canaan.

The day-care, located on the second floor of a two-family home, is operated by Nydia Carrillo, who has an active family child care home license, according to the Stamford Advocate

"Some person caused this injury that happened to the baby," a police official was quoted as saying at at the NBC New York website.

Police have narrowed it down to three persons of interest at the day care, but no arrests have been made, NBC New York said.

Police said this remains an active investigation.

"This is a sad day for the family of Bella Redondo the Stamford Police Department offers our condolences to Bella’s family. This is an ongoing investigation and we hope we could assist in bringing closure to the family," the police statement said.
