Officers were dispatched to a home in Darien shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday on a report of an assault in progress. When they arrived on scene, they saw that one of the participants, 58-year-old James Ward, was lying on a couch in the living room and appeared to be heavily intoxicated, incoherent and irritable, according to police. There was an odor of alcohol emanating from him, police said.

Officers spoke to the other participant, who said that they were attacked by ward. The person had arrived home to find Ward passed out, and when the person tried to rouse Ward, Ward's glasses fell off his head, causing him to become upset, police said. Ward then pushed the other person and punched them several times, according to police reports.

A third party told officers that Ward had drunk a substantial amount of alcohol that day, and Ward later admitted to drinking a bottle of vodka, which was found empty by the officers, according to police. Due to his level of intoxicated, Ward was taken to Stamford Hospital, according to police.

Ward was issued a misdemeanor summons for disorderly conduct and released on a promise to appear in court on Jan. 22. One of the conditions of his release was that he was not to return home or have contact with the protected parties, police said.

At around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Ward contacted one of the protected parties, which was in violation of the conditions of his release, police said. He called one of the people as he was trying to get a ride home from Stamford Hospital, police said.

When the person told Ward that he was not supposed to be contacting them, he became belligerent and used profanity, according to police.

Ward was found walking on the Post Road and taken into custody. He was charged with violations of conditions of release and held on a $10,000 bond. He was taken to court the next day.
