Jayson Negron, 15, who was at the wheel of the 2012 Subaru Forester, was shot to death and his passenger, 21-year-old Julian Fyffe, was wounded on May 9 during what Bridgeport police called a stolen car investigation.
Negron's family and Fyffe in multiple media reports had said the car was not stolen.
But the Connecticut Post says the SUV was reported stolen April 12 and was recovered on May 10.
Officers had attempted to pull over the SUV because it was stolen, Bridgeport police said, and Officer James Boulay shot Negron after he attempted to hit Boulay with the car at Fairfield and Park avenues.
Connecticut State Police are investigating the fatal shooting and the events that led up to.
