NORWALK, Conn. -- The bus driver in a crash on I-95 southbound in Norwalk that sent 18 other people to the hospital on Wednesday died of his injuries, according to state police.

Connecticut state police have identified the driver as Henry Woolfson of Hackensack, N.J. Thursday would have been Woolfson's 32nd birthday.

The accident took place at 3:19 p.m. Wednesday when the bus rear-ended a tractor-trailer just north of Exit 14 in the center lane, according to police reports. Woolfson was pinned inside the bus and had to be extricated by Norwalk firefighters. He was taken to Norwalk Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

Of the 41 passengers on the bus, 18 were sent to Norwalk Hospital and Stamford Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Traffic was reduced to one lane with occasional full closures to allow for emergency vehicles access to the scene throughout the afternoon. The highway was reopened around 9 p.m.

The accident remains under investigation.
