Tyrefe Kelly, 23, was charged with third-degree identity theft, interfering with an officer, criminal attempt at fifth-degree larceny, second-degree forgery and fourth-degree larceny. He was held on $25,000 bond and will appear in court June 18.
Officers responded to Best Buy on Connecticut Avenue at 4:45 p.m. Thursday on a report of someone making a large purchase with a fake ID, police said. An employee told officers that Kelly had come up to the register with $945.32 worth of video games and headphones, police said.
He told the cashier that he forgot his Best Buy credit card, and asked them to look it up by his name and date of birth, police said. He then handed the employee a New Jersey ID that the employee recognized to be fake, according to police.
When officers arrived, Kelly was speaking with a manager about the incident, police said. Kelly then saw the officers and began to leave the store, according to police.
As one officer attempted to stop him, Kelly said that his ID wasn't fake and he was leaving, police said. When the officer asked for identification, Kelly pushed past him and tried to run, police said.
The officer grabbed Kelly by his shirt, but Kelly spun around and out of the shirt, according to police. He then ran into a second officer and tried to pull away and began struggling, according to police reports.
A third officer took out his Taser and yelled at him to stop, according to police. But he continued to struggle after being told several times to stop, and eventually he was Tasered, police said.
Kelly fell to the ground but would not put his hands behind his back and continued to struggle, police said. He was then Tasered again and placed in handcuffs, according to police reports.
Officers found two New Jersey IDs in his possession with different names, police said. They also found a receipt from the Kohl's on Connecticut Avenue, showing a purchase of $1,504.71 made that day, police said.
When asked about it, Kelly admitted that he had used a fake ID to make a fraudulent purchase at that store, according to police reports. He said that the stolen goods were in the car of a friend who had driven him but wouldn't tell officers who the friend was, police said.
