Jose Martinez-Padilla, 53, was charged with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct. He was held on $25,000 bond and will appear in court Sept. 30.

Officers responded to an apartment on South Main Street around 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, and met a man who was bleeding from his arm, police said.

The man told officers that he had been at a party at his neighbor's house when he was stabbed, police said. He said that when everybody was asleep he got up to leave when another man, later identified as Martinez-Padilla, asked him where he was going, police said. He told police that the man, whom the victim did not know, then grabbed a steak knife from the kitchen and tried to stab him, according to police reports. He tried to block the attack and suffered puncture wounds in his arm and hand, police said.

Offices went to the apartment where the party was held and found Martinez-Padilla, police said. There was a trail of blood outside the door of the apartment, police said.

Martinez-Padilla told the officers that he was in the bathroom and the victim kept knocking on the door, police said. He said that he came out of the bathroom and the other man came at him with a knife, police said.

The two struggled, and Martinez-Padilla said that the other man was most likely stabbed during the struggle, but that it was not intentional, police said. Officers took Martinez-Padilla into custody. Officers located the knife in the kitchen sink and found that it had been washed, police said.
