Keith Preston, 30, was charged Saturday night with illegal manufacturing, distribution or sale of prescription drugs, assault on a peace officer, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, illegal possession near a school, sale within distance of a school, interfering with an officer, improper passing on a bicycle, no lights on a bicycle and criminal trespassing. He was held on $50,000 bond and will appear in court Aug. 12.

Officers on patrol in the area of South Main Street spotted a group of people in the roadway blocking traffic at 11 p.m. Saturday, police said. They tried to get the group to disperse and said Preston hopped on a bike and quickly fled the area. Police said Preston had no light on his bike and was riding recklessly.

Officers followed Preston in a cruiser, ordering him to stop, according to police reports. Preston ignored the officers, circling the cruiser with his bike and shouting obscenities, police said. He then rode to nearby Townhouse Gardens, where police said he rode his bike into a ditch and fell off. He fled on foot, police said.

Preston was located in the parking lot of 50 Washington St. shortly thereafter, police said. He was uncooperative with the officers who tried to take him into custody, police said. After a short struggle, he was taken into custody, police said.

One officer sustained a minor injury to his left arm during the struggle, police said.

Officers had also witnessed Preston leaning next to a street sign and leaving an item there, according to police reports. Police said it was later identified as 13 bags of crack cocaine. Preston also had $1,313 in cash in his possession, police said.

He was taken to Norwalk Hospital to be treated for a minor abrasion he sustained on his left cheek during his arrest.
