Box Truck Fire Closes East Putnam Avenue In Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. -- A box truck slammed into a pole at on East Putnam Avenue in Greenwich during the Monday morning commute, catching fire and closing the roadway, police and fire officials said.

A power line fell onto the truck, setting it ablaze, fire officials said. No injuries were reported despite the size of the fire. Greenwich Time reported that Eversource had to shut off power in the area before the fire could be extinguished. 

Eversource was reporting 47 power outages in the area at 9 a.m. Monday, down from 500 outages earlier. 

The accident occurred at 1380 E. Putnam Ave., near Taco Bell, closing the roadway between Havemeyer and Sound Beach Avenue at about 7:20 a.m. Monday, officials said. 

The traffic lights at the intersection were not working.
