WESTPORT, Conn. — A Black Lives Matter banner hung at the Unitarian Church in Westport was vandalized this weekend for the second time in a month.

The banner was originally hung outside the church in October of 2016, and had been cut off and ripped from its metal frame during the overnight hours between Aug. 23 and Aug. 24, according to police. After it was ripped down, the church ordered a replacement banner, and re-hung it during a dedication ceremony on Sept. 17.

Just five days after the new banner was dedicated, it was again targeted by vandals, the church said.

“Every time the banner is vandalized it fortifies our resolve to replace it and underscores the very need for its existence," said the Rev. Dr. John Morehouse, Senior Minister at the Unitarian Church in Westport.

According to the Westport News, the banner is believed to have been ripped down sometime on Saturday, but the church plans to have it re-hanged by the end of the week. The incident was reported to police at noon on Monday, and is now under investigation, according to the Westport News.
