Born in Glenwood, Long Island, he was the son of Dill and Mary Ann Mulligan Rutherford. He was a resident of Darien and later resided in Norwalk for the last 65 years. Rutherford graduated from Darien High School and then served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He later worked for CL&P, where he retired after a 42-year career. He was a proud member of the Marine Corps League, Mahackemo Detachment, where he dedicated many years honoring and helping veterans. He was also a dedicated member of the American Legion and the VFW. All who met him saw the gleam in his eyes as he spoke of the subject closet to his heart: his patriotism.

He and his beloved wife were 50-plus year "Golden" members of the Shore and Country Club, where they spent many beautiful summers with their family and friends. He loved his annual trips to Cape Cod with his family.

He was predeceased by his wife and parents. He is survived by sons, Tom, of Norwalk; Jeff and his wife, Joyce, of New Milford; Tracey, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and his daughter; Jill (Rutherford) Lee and her husband, Emmett, of Monroe; his seven grandchildren; and four siblings. Friends may call Friday, Jan. 30, from 4-8 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk. A prayer service will take place Saturday, Jan. 31, at 10 a.m. in Collins Funeral Home.
