NORWALK, Conn. – Timothy J. Murphy Jr., of Norwalk, died Jan. 9 at his home. He was 87.
He was born Feb. 9, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Edith and Timothy Murphy, a New York Police Department captain. Murphy graduated from Bishop Loughlin High School in 1943 and Fordham University in 1948. He also received an M.B.A. from the New York University Graduate School of Business.
Murphy served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines from 1943-46. He had a long career with IBM and retired in 1982. He was married for 63 years to Doris Williams Murphy.
The couple traveled extensively after his retirement, visiting 23 countries. They especially enjoyed numerous trips to Ireland, where Murphy enjoyed playing golf and taking in the local culture.
He is survived by his wife; five children, Timothy (Elizabeth) and Susan (Jim) Binder, of Charleston, W.V., Eileen Durand, of Guilford, Conn., Thomas, of Stamford, and Raymond (Geri), of Fairfield; and nine grandchildren. Murphy was predeceased by a son-in-law, Stephen Durand.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Norwalk. Burial will be private. Collins Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
