Thomas Sass, 74, Norwalk Electronics Engineer

NORWALK, Conn. – Thomas Sass of Norwalk died Oct. 22 at Norwalk Hospital in hospice care. He was 74.

Born Nov. 8, 1937, in New York City, he was the son of the Rev. John J. Sass and Carrie Brandon Sass. He attended public schools in New York City and graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1954 at the age of 16.

After attending Hunter College for two years, Sass enlisted in the Air Force and served as a missile specialist with secret clearance for four years. Upon his discharge, he married his childhood sweetheart, Louise, in September of 1960.

A technician and then a degreed electronics engineer, Sass worked for a variety of electronics firms, including ITT, Viking Labs, Techtronix, Intel, Xerox, Pitney Bowes and Automated Toll Systems.

Sass and his family lived in New York City, Banham, England, Albuquerque, N.M., Fremont, Calif., and Norwalk. He retired early and became a substitute teacher for Stamford public schools and taught at Mead School.

He also became involved with the Boy Scouts of America. For more than 10 years, Sass was a commissioner with the Powahay Connecticut Yankee District. His primary goal was to encourage more minority boys to enjoy the scouting experience, his family said. He also coordinated the scouting information and recruitment days at the Norwalk YMCA.

Sass was predeceased by a brother, Charles Sass; and a son-in-law, Jeffery Connell. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Andrea Rich and Arnita Connell; and a son, Brandon (Laurie) Sass; two sisters, Jeannette Boyd and Mildred Sass; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Downer Funeral Home in Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Yale Kidney Transplantation Center, 20 York St., New Haven, CT 06510.
