A native of New Canaan, Sonntag was a graduate of Wright Technical School and worked as a machinist, tool and die maker and model maker for Pitney-Bowes Inc. for 35 years in Stamford, Norwalk, and Shelton. He also served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War.
He was predeceased by wife Rose M. Sonntag of Norwalk, his parents William and Mary Sonntag of Norwalk, his sister Ruth Russo, as well as his three brothers, William, Arthur and John Sonntag.
He is survived by children Margaret M. Sonntag, Maureen R. Sonntag of Norwalk, Robert G. Sonntag and his wife Lauren McCann Sonntag, Michael T. Sonntag and his wife Kristen Murphy Sonntag.
He also is survived grandchildren , Sean M. Sonntag, Christopher G. Sonntag, and Kevin M. Sonntag, friend and companion Concetta Peters and many nieces and nephews.
