Philip Henry Vietmeyer, Formerly Of Rowayton, Former Airline Pilot

ROWAYON, Conn. -- Philip Henry Vietmeyer, 76, formerly of Rowayton, died from complications of Alzheimer’s disease on Saturday, April 25, in the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center in Wilmington, N.C.

Vietmeyer was born Jan. 29, 1939, in Whitefish Bay, Wisc., the son of Henry and Margaret Reinhart Vietmeyer. He was a 1962 graduate of Roanoke College in Salem, Va. He served five years as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy as a helicopter pilot.

He was hired by Eastern Airlines in 1968, where he later earned the rank of captain and flew with them until the airline shut down. He later flew 747 cargo aircraft for Atlas Airlines until his retirement.

He enjoyed many ski trips out West with his pilot buddies, many of whom lived near him in Rowayton. He loved coaching his sons in both Little League baseball and soccer. In 2006, he moved with his wife, Francie, from Rowayton to St. James, N.C.  

A celebration of life service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday in the St. James Chapel in Southport, N.C. Fellowship with the family will follow at Waterway Park.

He is survived by his wife Frances Morio Vietmeyer (Francie); two stepsons Geoff Hermance and wife Zeneida and their son River, and Scott Hermance; a sister, Jean Churchill and her husband Tom and their daughters Kim (husband Matt and sons Will and Henry) and Kate (husband Adam and sons Jack and Charlie).

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Lower Cape Fear Hospice or a charity of one’s choice.
