NORWALK, Conn. Renate Karadimas of Norwalk died Tuesday, Aug. 28 at her home. She was 79.
Born Aug. 23, 1933 in Bonn, Germany, she was the daughter of Josef Pies and Maria Mesenberg Pies. She remained in Germany throughout World War II and attended a private high school in Andernach, Germany, where she studied English and French.
After high school, Karadimas continued her studies at medical school and received a medical lab technician degree in 1950. She practiced at a German hospital until 1953. She then traveled to London, where she was a private tutor of French and German for three years.
In 1955, a New Canaan family sponsored her move to the U.S. to work as their au pair. She then moved to New York City where she resumed her career in the medical field as a medical lab and radiology technician.
Karadimas also lived in Buffalo, N.Y. and California before settling in Norwalk. She attended the University of Bridgeport, where she majored in German and Spanish and earned a teaching certificate.
She taught at Norwalk public schools and Joel Barlow High School in Redding in the 1970s. From 1985 until her retirement in 2005, she owned and operated Helga's Cleaning Service, serving Fairfield County. In 2007, she graduated from the Institute of Children's Literature and created a collection of stories for her granddaughters.
She is survived by a daughter, Alexandra (Joseph "Joey") Casubolo, and two granddaughters.
Funeral services will be private. Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home in Norwalk is handling arrangements.
