Milkavich was born Sept. 26, 1919, in Bridgeport, Conn., to John and Mary Capetanidis. She attended Westport schools and graduated from Staples High School on Riverside Avenue in 1937. She received two bachelor's degrees, one from Central Connecticut State College in commercial education in 1943 and another from Danbury State College in 1956 in elementary education; a master's degree from Danbury State College in 1959; a sixth year certificate from Fairfield University in 1967 and 15 more credits toward a teacher's reading certificate from the University of Bridgeport.
She was an educator for over 30 years, including 26 years in the Norwalk School District. She was a life member of the National Teachers Association, Connecticut Educational Association, Associated Retired Teachers of Connecticut and AARP National Association of Retired Teachers Branch. Upon retirement, she volunteered as a tax counselor for the elderly, worked with the State of Connecticut Social Services as an advocate for residents of a local nursing home, and drove senior citizens to various appointments.
Milkavich is survived by her children, Robert Milkavich (Shirley) of Houston, Texas; Patricia Milkavich Stiltner of Surprise, Ariz.; Donald Milkavich (Joan) of Williamsburg, Va.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Katherine Mondul of Rockford, Ill. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph G. Milkavich; and sisters, Ann Byers and Olga Aronow.
Calling hours are Thursday, April 3, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 S. Benson Road, Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, April 4, at St. Luke's Catholic Church, 49 Turkey Hill Road, Westport. Interment will follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport.
