NORWALK, Conn. Ethlin L. Fawcett, a former Norwalk resident, died June 4. She was 87.
Fawcett, who went by her middle name, Lilybell, was born March 15, 1925, in Panama. She graduated from the La Boca Normal Teacher's College and attended the University of Panama. Fawcett worked as an elementary school teacher in the former Panama Canal Zone, retiring after 35 years. She moved to Norwalk with her husband, Ellis L. Fawcett.
In Norwalk, Fawcett began a second career at the Norwalk Public Library, serving as head of the film department before retiring after 15 years. She then moved to Austin, Texas, where she a resident for more than 17 years.
Fawcett volunteered more than 20,000 hours at the North Austin Medical Center, where she sewed heart-shaped pillows for recovering cardiology surgery patients. She also volunteered at the ICU Waiting Area, where she would comfort families.
She was the first recipient of the Frist Award for excellence in volunteerism at North Austin Medical Center, where she also served as a member of the auxiliary.
Fawcett is survived by a daughter, Isabel Fawcett; a son, Ellis Fawcett Jr., both of Indianapolis; and several nieces, nephews and relatives in the United States and England.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an educational institution.
