Joseph R. Lametta Sr., 89, Of Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Joseph R. Lametta Sr., 89, of Norwalk, husband of Katherine Italiano Lametta, died Tuesday, July 14th at Norwalk Hospital.

Born in Norwalk on July 8, 1926, he was the son of the late Antonio and Carmella Piccarella Lametta. He was a lifelong Norwalk resident.

Lametta was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corp. Along with his brother James, he was the co-owner of Lametta Bros. Masonry Contractors.

After his discharge from the Marines in 1947, he started playing basketball locally with the Spring Hill Tigers Basketball Team. In addition to basketball, he played softball and was an avid bowler.

A life member of the Laurel Athletic Club, Lametta was sworn in July 1, 1969 at the age of 42. Lametta began serving on the board of governors in 1972. He was elected vice president June 19, 1972 and became president of the club following the recommendation of the nominating committee July 1, 1974. He held the office of president until stepping down in 1976, continuing to serve on the board of directors for many years.

He also was a member of the American Legion and was a fixture in the Norwalk Memorial Day Parade, along with his late brother Jimmy.

In addition to his wife Katherine, he is survived by three children, son Joseph R. Lametta Jr. and his wife Wendy of Wilton, son Ronald of Newtown and daughter Patricia Goldbach and her husband Kurt of Newtown; a grandson Matthew Lametta, and three granddaughters Christine Lametta, Amy Lametta and Sara Lametta; three sisters Connie Williams, Louise Scianna and Rose Burke and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church, 1 Father Conlon Place, Norwalk. Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery, Richards Avenue, Norwalk.

Friends may visit from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk.
