John W. Lysobey, 98, Of Norwalk

NORWALK, Conn. - John W. Lysobey of Norwalk died Friday, Nov. 1. He was 98.

Lysobey was born April 7, 1915, in Danbury, to Samuel Lysobey and Anna Boyko. He grew up in Norwalk, where he attended school and met his wife.

At the beginning of World War II, he was employed by a Norwalk company under government contract. He was a previous commodore of the Sprite Island Yacht off the Norwalk shores and a Norwalk Harbor Master for several years.

He was awarded the Blakeley Award, considered by the United States Power Squadron of the time as the nation’s highest maritime safety award. He became a lifelong member of the U.S. Power Squadron and taught boating safety to many Norwalk area boaters.

Lysobey is survived by his sons, David Lysobey of Arkansas, John A. Lysobey of upstate New York and Wayne Lysobey of Norwalk and their families; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Christine; daughters, Jeanne Lysobey Bloom and Linda Lysobey Nelson; brother, Richard Lysobey; and sister, Sylvia Lysobey Muddiman. 

Calling hours are Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk. Services will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Norwalk. There will be a memorial service in Ludlow, Vt., for his numerous friends there.
