James Tavella Sr., 88, Norwalk Contractor

NORWALK, Conn. – James "Jim” Rocco Tavella Sr., a lifelong Norwalk resident, died Dec. 12 after a prolonged illness. He was 88.

Tavella worked as a contractor and professional estimator for T.J. Riordan Co. in Norwalk.

Born June 27, 1924, in Norwalk, he was the son of Rocco and Lena Masi Tavella. He attended Norwalk schools and graduated from Rice Technical School. He was married to Frances Tomasetta Tavella, who predeceased him.

Tavella was a life member of the South Norwalk Boat Club, a longtime member of the Laurel Athletic Club and a member and past financial secretary of the Local 210 Carpenters Union.

He is survived by a son, Jim (Susan) Tavella Jr.; two daughters, Betty Brink and Judy Mocciola; a former son-in-law, Alan Mocciola; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two great-great grandsons.

Tavella is also survived by his companion, Dee Wickie; a brother, Joe (Aline) Tavella; two sisters, Flora Tavella and Jane Gilchrist; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by three brothers, Frank, Dominick “Muzzy” and Rocco Jr.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Collins Funeral Home in Norwalk. SNBC members will meet at the funeral home at 7 p.m. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew Church in Norwalk. Burial will be private.
