Hubert A. Stommel, Of Norwalk, Darien, 82

NORWALK, Conn. -- Hubert A. “Hugh” Stommel, of Norwalk and Darien, died at age 82 on Thursday, Feb. 19.

Stommel was born and raised in Hammond, Ind. He graduated from Purdue University in 1954 with a B.S. in chemical engineering, and in 1959 he received his MBA from Columbia Business School, where he was president of his class.

He served on active duty in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps during 1955-57, and in 1966 was presented with a bronze merit award by the Greater New York Fund for "outstanding community service" in fundraising.

Early in his career, Stommel worked for Union Carbide Plastics, Celanese and Booz, Allen & Hamilton management consultants. In 1971, he started his own management consulting firm, Stommel Associates Inc., which until 2001 was headquartered on Post Road in Darien.

The firm specialized in the plastics and office furniture industries, completing competitive strategy assignments internationally for more than 90 clients, including five of the Fortune 100.

In 1987 and again in 1990, Stommel Associates Inc. was named one of the top 100 consulting firms in the United States by Consultants News for "quality of work and reputation."

Stommel had resided for the last 40 years primarily in Darien and Norwalk, and enjoyed winters in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

He served on the board of directors of Columbia Business School and that of Hilltop Homes Inc. He was a member of the Landmark Club and the United Church of Rowayton.

Stommel is survived by his daughter, Kirsten Gonneville, son-in-law Keith, and his beloved granddaughters, Brinley and Jensen, of Medway, Mass.; his sister, Evelyn Greene and her husband, Bob of Tucson, Ariz.; his sister-in-law Charlotte Stommel of Cross Lanes, W. Va.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Eric and brother Ray.

A memorial service will be held at the United Church of Rowayton at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28.
