Grace Ross Shanley, 87, Of Rowayton, Co-Founded CCP

ROWAYTON, Conn. - Grace Ross Shanley of Rowayton, formerly of New Canaan, died Monday, Sept. 8. She was 87.

Shanley was born March 24, 1927, in New York City, to Henry and Evelyn (Timothy) Ross.

She was the co-founder of the Center for Contemporary Printmaking (CCP). She, along with her husband, Bill, founded the Center in 1995. She grew up in Jackson Heights, N.Y., where she attended Garden Country Day school and went on to graduate from Manhattanville College with a BS in mathematics. She also studied at the Parsons School of Design, Baltimore Institute and Art Students League.

She began her career with the McCann-Erickson advertising agency in NYC. Moving from Manhasset N.Y., to New Canaan in 1975, she continued her career in the arts, as an artist, art director and visionary art center founder. For almost 20 years until 1995 she served as the executive director of the Silvermine Guild. From 1995 when she founded CCP, served as chairman or chairman emeritus of the Board. She was on the board of The Shanley Family Foundation and was a board member of the Vermont Studio Center. She was also a member of the Pastel Society of America. Additionally, she was president of the Manhattanville Club, director of the Woman’s Club of Nassau/Suffolk.

Shanley is survived by her husband, William C. Shanley III; children, Sharon S. Sniffen, William C. Shanley IV, Thomas R. Shanley, Mary Evelyn S. Malloy, Timothy K. Shanley and Patrick M. Shanley; and 15 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; and brother, Thomas B. Ross.

A Funeral Service will take place at 11 a.m. Sept. 20 at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Blooming Grove, Pa. A lunch and celebration will follow at the Blooming Grove Club. A “Celebration of Life” will take place Oct. 12 at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking (time TBD).
