Hawkins was born in Stamford, to David E and Sylvia Brown Hawkins, he has been a resident of Bridgeport for the past 16 years and prior to that he was a resident of Norwalk for many years. He was a design engineer for Silicon Valley Group for 30 years and was a disciple of Messiah Baptist Church where he served as a former member of the Willing Workers and Men of the Kingdom Ministries.
Hawkins is survived by his wife, Della Beal Hawkins of Bridgeport; sons, Gilbert Hawkins, Jr. of New Haven and Timothy Hawkins of N.J.; step-sons, Brian and Scott Sheffield of Bridgeport; daughter, Deanna Cullen of Stamford; a stepdaughter, Tausha Sheffield of Ga.; sister, Jacqueline Owens of Bridgeport; nine grandchildren; a niece; other relatives; and friends.
Calling hours are Saturday, Dec. 28 from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28 at Messiah Baptist Church, 210 Congress St., Bridgeport with Pastor James Logan, officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
