Breaking News: 6-Year-Old Norwalk Girl Dies Of Flu

Gertrude Berman, 98, Former Norwalk Teacher

NORWALK, Conn. – Gertrude Stull Berman, a longtime Norwalk resident, died Oct. 20 at home. She was 98.

Berman was the daughter of John Sherman and Bessie Hirschfield Stull. She was married to Samuel Berman, who predeceased her. She graduated from Danbury State Teachers College and received a master’s degree from Columbia University.

She taught at Norwalk public schools from 1935-77. After her retirement, she volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Literacy Volunteers. She loved animals, especially cats.

Berman is survived by a niece, Judith C. Sleeper; two nephews, Dr. Martin G. Cherniack and Dr. Gordon B. Stull; and a stepdaughter, Sue B. Zamkow. She was predeceased by a sister, Charlotte Stull Cherniack; a brother, Ashworth Nathaniel Stull; and a nephew, Eric Stull.

A graveside service was held Monday at Beth Israel Cemetery in Norwalk. Collins Funeral Home in Stamford handled the arrangements. Memorial contributions can be made to PAWS or PETA .
