George A. Shimko, 69, Of Norwalk

NORWALK, Conn. – George A. Shimko, 69, of Norwalk, husband of Mary Ann Kurensky Shimko, died Monday July 6 at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Born Aug. 30, 1945, son of Mary Sirade Shimko of Norwalk and the late George Shimko, he was a lifelong Norwalk resident. Shimko was a Vietnam War veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Following duty, he was employed by Homelite, in Port Chester, New York. Due to the illness of his father, he left Homelite, and  returned to Norwalk and took over the management of the family’s Sunshine Restaurant on Post Road.

Shimko later operated Presley Auto Parts and then went to Highfield Manufacturing. He retired several years ago from Highfield after almost 30 years with the firm, and was a holder of multiple patens.

Survivors, in addition to his wife and mother, include daughter Melinda Vieux (Rob) of Trumbull, Connecticut; one son, Chris Shimko (Lauren) of Norwalk; five grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law; a brother and sister-in-law of Wilton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call Thursday, July 9 at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., from 4-8 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, July 10 at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 203 East Ave., Norwalk. Burial with military honors will follow in St. John Cemetery.
