NORWALK, Conn. – Frederick Heidel Roos of East Norwalk died Oct. 22 in his sleep at Norwalk Hospital of congestive heart failure. He was 81.
Roos was born Jan. 23, 1931, to Frederick and Elizabeth Roos. A lifelong Norwalk resident, he graduated from Norwalk High School in 1949. He worked for Nash Engineering and retired from PerkinElmer.
A Navy veteran, he served during the Korean War and married Margery "Sis" Hall after his return from service. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in April. He played country and western music with his band, Middle of the Road, at the Oyster Festival, Danbury Fair, American Legion and other venues and roadhouses throughout Connecticut.
Roos also hosted summer family picnics on Second Street, volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul food bank, collected cans for the Norwalk High School marching band and played music at hospitals and nursing homes.
He was a member and past president of AARP Chapter 3929 and enjoyed many dinners at the Sons of Italy. His health had been failing in recent months and in his last hours, he was surrounded by more children, in-laws and grandchildren than the room could hold, his family said.
Roos is survived by his wife, Margery; seven children, Heidi (Howard Sann) Roos, of Bridgeport, Tina (Thomas) Noonan, of Stratford, Frederick (Cheryl) Roos Jr., of Woodbury, Jonathan Roos, of Norwalk, Eliza (Robert) Hoffman, of Newtown, Matthew (Brenda) Roos, of Norwalk, and Victoria (Wilfredo) Perez, of Norwalk; and 22 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Karl; and a grandson, Army Spc. Wilfredo Perez Jr., who was killed in action in 2003 while serving in Iraq.
Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Collins Funeral Home in Norwalk. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Norwalk. Burial with military honors will follow at Fairfield Memorial Cemetery in Stamford.
