Frederick G. Choromanski, 94, Special Education Teacher In Norwalk

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Frederick Gabriel Choromanski of Fairfield died Jan. 27. He was 94.

Choromanski was born March 18, 1919, in Bridgeport, to Franciszek and Aniela Dzwonkowska Choromanski. He grew up in Poland and received his primary and secondary education and apprenticeship to become a tailor there.

During World War ll, he served as a first sergeant in the U.S. Army Infantry in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he received further training at the Gentleman's School of Design in New York City and later taught courses in tailoring. Under the G.I. Bill, he furthered his education, first receiving a degree from Seton Hall University. He later received advanced degrees from the University of Bridgeport and Fairfield University. He also received a fellowship to study Russian at Dartmouth College.

He left the tailoring field to become a special education teacher in Newark, N.J., and then in Norwalk. He later was appointed director of special education for Norwalk schools. In addition to his duties as an administrator, he taught Russian language at Brien McMahon High School.

He was a member of Polish Falcons Nest 36, serving as secretary for 50 years, the Dr. B.L. Smykowski scholarship committee, the Polish Heritage Society, VFW Post 9427, American Legion Post 74, the Disabled American Veterans, the Council for Exceptional Children, and other professional organizations. He was involved in activities at the Fairfield Senior Center. He was a member of various ministries at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Fairfield.

Choromanski is survived by his wife, Evelyn; children, Marcella Vidoli (Donald), Frederick Choromanski (Marion), Gabrielle Prosnitz (Eric), Annette Kenney (Robert), and Jeanette Howard (Jack); and 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Edwin.

Calling hours are Thursday, Jan. 30, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Edmund W. Dougiello Funeral Home, 36 S. Pine Creek Road in Fairfield. Friends are invited to go directly to St. Anthony's Church, 149 S. Pine Creek Road, Fairfield, for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, followed by interment with military honors in Oaklawn Cemetery.
