Former Norwalk Educator Stuart Opdahl Dies At 77

BEDFORD, N.Y. – Stuart Alden Opdahl, of Newtown, Conn. and formerly of Bedford, died on Aug. 7. He was 77.

Opdahl was born in Bethpage on Dec. 20, 1937 to Olaf and Clara Opdahl.

He graduated with a B.S. in Biology from Long Island University, a Master’s from Hofstra University, and a Permanent Certificate for School Administrator and Supervisor and School District Administrator.

Opdahl spent four decades in school administration, including working at Bronxville Public Schools, Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen, Hicksville Public Schools, Norwalk Public Schools and Oxford Public Schools.

He was a member of various professional organizations, including the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) and the American Association of School Personnel Administrators.

Opdahl was predeceased by his parents, and two brothers, Robert Opdahl of Hurley, and Roger Opdahl of Williamsport, Pa.

He is survived by his wife Janis "Packy," daughter Dorian Cundari and her husband James of Brookfield, Conn., son Darryl and his wife Debra of Norwalk, Conn., son John and his wife Karen of Rockville, Md., son James of Newtown, Conn., son Matthew and his wife Sarah of New Fairfield, Conn., eight grandchildren, brother Everett of Glen Arm, Md. and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews and their families.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, Aug. 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Honan Funeral Home in Newtown, Conn.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, also at the Honan Funeral Home and followed by interment at Newtown Village Cemetery, located on Elm Drive at the intersection of Hawley Road.

Memorial donations can be made to an educational foundation of your choice, the American Diabetes Association or the American Parkinson Disease Association.
