Father Joseph J. Kohut, 98, Retired Norwalk Priest

Monsignor Joseph J. Kohut, 98, of Norwalk, died on Aug. 5 at Notre Dame Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Peekskill, N.Y., he was the son of the late Michael and Barbara (Biro) Kohut. Joseph had served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning a Bronze Star Medal, as well as in the Air Force during the Korean War. He graduated from St. Jerome’s College in Ontario and attended Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md., and was ordained a Catholic priest on May 26, 1962.

Over the span of more than 55 years as a priest, Msgr. Joe blessed and touched countless lives in his service to Our Lord. Msgr. Joe was assigned to many diocesan parishes and was pastor of St Rose of Lima in Newtown and then pastor of St. Matthew in Norwalk, from which he retired. 

He went on after retirement to serve as Chaplain at All Saints Catholic School in Norwalk, where he spread peace, love and joy to faculty and students alike. Msgr. Joe was also a member of the Catholic War Veterans and the Knights of Columbus.

He spent a six-month sabbatical at Notre Dame and was one of its most devoted fans.

He was predeceased by his brothers Michael, Francis and John, and his sister Eleanor. He is survived by his nephews; James Kohut (Sally) and Robert Kohut (Cathy), and a great-nephew, Loren.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Aug. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Matthew Church, 216 Scribner Ave, Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Bishop Frank Caggiano at St. Matthew Church on Friday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow at 3 p.m. at Assumption Cemetery, 1055 Oregon Road, Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.
