Ernest J. Herold, 85, Longtime Norwalk Resident, Insurance Agent

NORWALK, Conn. - Ernest J. “Ernie” Herold, a longtime resident of Norwalk, and Hope Mills, N.C., died November 20. He was 85.

Herold was born June 15, 1929, to Ernest J. Herold Sr. and Irene (Brennan) Herold. He grew up in The Bronx, N.Y. He attended St. Joseph’s College Seminary at Dunwoodie, N.Y., in study for the priesthood before leaving to spend three years in the U.S. Army. He finished as a field artillery first lieutenant having been posted at Ft. Dix, N.J.;Ft. Sill, Okla., and Ft. Bragg, N.C. After his military service, he returned to New York. He was a life insurance salesman for Northwestern Mutual Life, Massachusetts Mutual Life and Equitable Life, with advanced training as a chartered life underwriter and certified financial consultant. He also established two insurance partnerships (Herold & Herold and Angione Agencies).

He was a president of the Norwalk Rotary club, president of St. Thomas the Apostle School Parent-Teacher Association and a member of both St Thomas the Apostle Parish in Norwalk, and Assumption Parish in Westport, before moving to Fayetteville, N.C., and, ultimately, Houston.

Herold is survived by his brother, Arthur Herold of Norfolk, Mass.; children, Ernest J. (E.J.) Herold III of Brussels, Belgium, Anne (Andrew) Benowitz of North Haven, Irene (Edward) Spruck, of New Canaan, Mary (David) Twarog, of Trumbull, Suzanne (James) Rippeto of Houston and Marc (Jennifer) Herold, of Westport; 14 grandchildren. He was predeceaed by his parents; brother, Edward J. Herold; wife, Suzanne (Skinner) Herold; and son, Edward Brennan Herold.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Dec. 5 at Assumption Church, 98 Riverside Ave., Westport with a private interment at St. John’s Cemetery.
