Edward Charles Berndt Jr., 91, Of Norwalk

NORWALK, Conn. -- Edward Charles Berndt Jr., 91, of Norwalk, died Saturday, Aug. 15.

He was born Oct. 6, 1923, in Norwalk to the late Edward C. Berndt Sr. and Jessie (Jennings) Berndt.  

He was married to Barbara (Rogers) Berndt for 58 years.

After graduating from Norwalk High School and attaining his BS. in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, he served in the Navy during World War II. While working as an elevator inspector for Otis Elevator in New York City, he earned his MBA from Columbia University at night.

In 1952, he began his career at PerkinElmer, traveling the world and advancing to director of global marketing before fully retiring in 1990.

An avid golfer and fierce competitor since his youth, he was a longtime member of Shorehaven Golf Club, where he was a seven-time club champion and served as board member and president.

After moving to North Carolina, he played golf well into his 80s and was an active player in the American Contract Bridge League, where he became a bronze life master.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mary Beth Fleury; three sons, Edward, Daniel and Matthew; a sister, Clare Wood; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son Benjamin and sisters Martha Berndt, Sue Baginski and Cathy Hotchkiss.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 203 East Ave., Norwalk.
