Earl S. Carpenter, 91, Retired Deputy Chief, Norwalk Fire Department

NORWALK, Conn. - Earl S. Carpenter of Norwalk died Sunday, April 13. He was 91.

Carpenter was born in Norwalk, andwas the son of Stanley and Gladys (Beach) Carpenter. He was a graduate of Norwalk High School, class of 1940. He was a World War II Veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1951. After the corps he joined the Norwalk Fire Department in 1949 working up to Deputy Chief, retiring after 31 years in 1980.

He co-founded the Hot Shots Junior Drum and Bugle Corps with police officer and friend Bill Anderson. He was a founder and treasurer of the Norwalk Municipal Employees Credit Union. He served as police commissioner for two years under Mayor O'Connor, was a commandant of the Marine Corps League-Mohackemo Detachment and served in many capacities during his 91 years at the East Avenue United Methodist Church. He served on the Veteran's Memorial Committee; the East Norwalk Improvement Association and the East Norwalk Historical Cemetery Committee.

Carpenter is survived by his wife, Marjorie; children, David Carpenter (Debbie) of Waterbury, Alan Earl Carpenter of Norwalk, Caroline Ring of Louisiana, formerly of Prospect and Lynn Westfield (Peter) of Norwalk; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; and grandson, Chris Hirschmann.

Calling hours are Thursday, April 17 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 18 at the East Ave., United Methodist Church, Norwalk. Burial with full military honors will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Norwalk.
