Dr. Edward Littman, M.D., Of Norwalk, Vietnam War Veteran, Nephrologist

NORWALK, Conn. - Edward Littman, M.D., of Norwalk died June 3. He was 78.

Dr. Littman was born April 4, 1935, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of Morris and Goldie. He graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor in Philosophy and received his M.D. from the Chicago Medical School. Trained in international medicine and nephrology, he was a nephrologist and captain at the U.S. Army Hospital in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri during the Vietnam War. After the army, he came to Norwalk, where he was appointed chief of the Section of Nephrology and started the dialysis unit at Norwalk Hospital and remained the medical director from 1972 through the purchase by Gambro and then Davita unit 2006. He was an associate clinical professor of medicine at Yale University School of Medicine.

In 2005, Dr. Littman was the recipient of the James P. Colangelo M.D. Achievemnet award from the National Kidney Foundation. He was nationally recognized as the vice chairman of the National Kidney Foundation of Connecticut Medical Advisory Committee from 1978 to 1981 and chairman from 1981 to 1984. He was also the chairman for the End Stage Renal Disease Network Coordinating Council of Connecticut from 1979 to 1981.

In his retirement, Dr. Littman volunteered at the Norwalk Community Health Center where he worked with the residents, giving lectures and teaching; and at Americares caring for patients.

Dr. Littman is survived by his wife, Elaine; children, Jay (Sue) Littman and Karen (Jeff) Horowitz; five grandchildren; and brother, Dr. Howard Littman. He was predeceased by his brothers, Arthur and Irwin Littman.

A private service will be held for the immediate family. A public memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
