Craig Matheson, 81, Taught At Norwalk Community College

WESTPORT, Conn. - Craig Matheson of Westport died Saturday, Aug. 3. He was 81.

Matheson was born Sept. 22, 1931, in Middleboro, Mass., son of Jack and Verna (Dunphy) Matheson, and has been a Westport resident for the past 56 years. He was a graduate of the University of Southern Maine, received his Master’s degree from Wesleyan University, and did his doctoral work at Columbia University. He was a longtime member and former deacon at the Saugatuck Congregational Church and a member of the Westport YMCA. He joined the faculty at Staples High School in 1957, at which time he started The Staples Players. From 1972 to 1990, he taught and was an administrator at Darien High School, and in 1989 he began teaching at Norwalk Community College. He served his community by participating in many civic organizations and charitable outreaches.

Matheson is survived by his wife, Annetta (McCartney) Matheson; daughters, Christina Logan of Tolland, Gail Matheson of Istanbul, Turkey, and Mary Matheson Weiss of New York City; sisters, Shirley Vincent of Salem, N.H., and Virginia Lemaire of Taunton, Mass.; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11 at the Greens Farms Congregational Church, 71 Hillandale Road, Westport with the Rev. Alison J. Buttrick Patton officiating.
