Born in 1922 and raised in Waverly, Va., Kealey moved to Richmond, Va., after high school to attend secretarial school and then moved to Washington, D.C., where she lived for seven years working for the War Department and, later, for IBM. She sang in church choirs, took courses at Norwalk Community College, reupholstered furniture, made her daughter’s dresses, was a good cook and accompanied her husband to the opera more times than she could count.
