NORWALK, Conn. -- A tractor-trailer struck the overpass for Strawberry Hill Avenue during rush hour Thursday, breaking a water main, sending water pouring onto I-95 and causing huge traffic delays , Norwalk police said via Twitter.

The accident at about 6:15 p.m. between Exits 17 and 16 on the southbound side of the highway. The water main is part of the infrastructure of the overpass.

As a result of the accident and the subsequent flooding, two lanes were closed into the night Thursday, causing large traffic delays, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

The broken water main left many without water for hours in East Norwalk, the Norwalk Fire Department and Norwalk Police Department said via Twitter.

"TT Struck I-95 Bridge: Broken Water Main Many East Norwalk Residents w/o Water," Norwalk Police Lt. Paul Resnick said via Twitter @NPD_PIO.

Engine 3 was "on scene of a truck versus the Strawberry Hill overpass on Interstate 95 in which the attached water main broke," the Norwalk Fire Department said via Facebook.

I-95 was cleared in time for Friday's morning's rush hour.
