NORWALK, Conn. – Mixed results on test scores and a visit from a Cabinet member led Norwalk’s news this week.

? The Department of Education released the state’s standardized test scores this week. Norwalk’s students improved in some areas, but backslid in others. New Schools Superintendent Manuel Rivera said the scores were “on par” with the rest of the state’s. ? U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan toured Norwalk’s Washington Village to talk with state and local leaders about plans to replace the public housing complex.

? Tax-free shopping week starts in Norwalk and across Connecticut on Sunday. Clothes, shoes and other items under $300 will carry no sales tax through Aug. 24.

? In police news, Norwalk Police charged two women with prostitution after seeing an ad they had placed on Craigslist. They also closed a case on an illegal gambling ring that had been operating on East Avenue.

? Shenton King announced plans to renovate a historic oyster fishing vessel that had been docked in Norwalk for decades.
