WESTPORT, Conn. -- After all the recent reports of sexual misconduct against movie producer Harvey Weinstein, who has a house in Westport, the filmmaker's alma mater is taking steps to revoke an honorary degree it bestowed upon him.

Several actresses have come forward to say that Weinstein sexually harassed or assaulted them over the past couple decades while he served as a powerful movie producer in Hollywood. Both the New Yorker and the New York Times have published scathing exposés detailing years of complaints against Weinstein. He has been fired from the Weinstein Company, which he started with his brother Bob, and dozens of major figures in the entertainment industry have come out to condemn him.

Weinstein graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1973 and also received an honorary degree from the school in 2000.

"The university is well aware of the allegations involving Mr. Weinstein," the university said in a statement on Wednesday. "The university has initiated the process, pursuant to the SUNY Board of Trustees policy, for the revocation of a SUNY honorary degree."

SUNY Buffalo said that Disney, on behalf of Miramax, gave a total of $22,750 in 2004 and 2005 to support a media study scholarship at the university. The gift was used to award scholarships to students in 2005.

The school said that Weinstein personally never made a gift to the university.
