Study: Wage Gap Widens In Connecticut

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — People earning Connecticut's top salaries have seen their wages grow at a higher rate than the rest of the workforce since the recession began, a study finds.

"Connecticut is increasingly becoming a state of 'haves' and 'have-nots,' and if current trends continue, the have-nots will make up an increasing share of the state’s population," says the State of Working Connecticut 2012 study by the family advocacy group, Connecticut Voices for Children.

People earning salaries in the 90th percentile and above saw their wages increase by 11 percent from 2006 to 2011, while median incomes grew by only 2.4 percent, the study found.

Workers earning the lowest salaries saw a slight drop in wages, says the study.

And although the unemployment rate for white workers dropped in 2011, it has continued to rise for black and Hispanic workers, the study found.
