WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a stunning development, House Speaker John Boehner will resign from Congress and vacate his seat at the end of October, according to multiple reports.

Boehner was under pressure from within his own party over the debate to defund Planned Parenthood.

The 65-year-old Boehner told two reporters Thursday evening that he had nothing left to accomplish after Pope Francis accepted his invitation to speak before Congress earlier in the day, according to Politico.
