Drivers may need to be on the lookout for fast-falling snowflakes as they head out for late shopping or Christmas Eve services as temperatures drop and a cold front moves through, the National Weather Service said.

Scattered snow showers are possible mainly after 3 p.m. Tuesday, the weather service said. The day will be partly sunny, with a high near 36. The chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

The cold front could even bring some heavy snow in the evening, causing a reduction in visibility for drivers. Snow showers could be heavy, but even a light dusting combined with rapidly falling temperatures could cause hazardous driving conditions on Christmas Eve.

A chance of snow continues until about 10 p.m. Tuesday, with a a gradual clearing of clouds and a low of about 15 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

Christmas Day will be mostly sunny, with a high near 27.
