A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Every town in Fairfield County canceled school for the day, roadways are slick and snow-covered, and Metro-North is reporting weather-related delays on the New Haven Line, with over an hour delay on the Danbury Branch.

“The roads are going to be slippery [Monday], there is no doubt,” said Gary Lessor, assistant director of the Weather Center at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury.

Snow, freezing rain and sleet will continue in the area through 3 p.m. before changing over to all snow with wind gusts up to 24 mph. Up to a tenth of an inch of ice and another 2 inches of snow and sleet are possible. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent.

More snow is possible north of the Merritt Parkway, with more ice and freezing rain occurring along the shoreline, the National Weather Service said.

"We must all be prepared to deal with these types of storms. DOT trucks will be treating the roads through the entire storm so we can keep the state open for business," Gov. Dannel Malloy said. Driving conditions are not optimal, but Malloy said roads are passable.

The snow will run through 2 a.m. Tuesday with another 2 inches possible before clearing with a high near freezing. Wind-chills will make it feel closer to single-digit temperatures.

"Personally, I think there could be delays on Tuesday as well,” Lessor said.

Wednesday will see increasing clouds and a high of about 26 degrees.

Snow showers could move into the area Thursday with a high of 34 degrees. The chance of snow is 50 percent.

Friday will be mostly sunny, but bitter cold will return to the area with a high of only 16 degrees.
