Slain Soldier's Funeral Set for Thursday

Flags will be flying at half-staff Monday in New York in honor of David R. Fahey, a fallen U.S. Army soldier with deep ties to Norwalk. Fahey, a member of the military police, died Monday in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device went off.

The Department of Defense originally announced that Fahey was from Norwalk, but his family has released a statement saying he grew up in Yorktown Heights, N.Y. Fahey was born in Norwalk and went to sixth grade at Ponus Ridge Middle School.

Fahey's grandmother lives in Norwalk, and he has an aunt in Shelton. His family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Yorktown Funeral Home, 945 E. Main St., Shrub Oak, N.Y. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Church, 137 Moseman Road, Yorktown Heights.

In addition to local friends and family, servicemen and women all over the world are remembering Fahey. Donghyeok Chae, a South Korean, worked with Fahey in Camp Walker, Korea. "Now I'm really sad that he is now in heaven," Chae wrote to The Daily Norwalk.

Chae said he was a Republic of Korea Army soldier working with U.S. Army as Korean Augmentation To the United States Army (KATUSA) in the 188th Military Police Company.

"I was a team leader of Fahey," Chae wrote. "He was always trying to treat KATUSA in a good manner and was the coolest guy I've ever known. Even though there are many differences in terms of culture, custom, living style between America and Korea, he was the type of guy who was always willing to take all the challenges and accept the differences. I still feel the way he call me 'Sgt. Chae' and his facial expression when he tried to taste Korean food."

Fahey has been awarded the Bronze Star for service, the Purple Heart and the Combat Action Badge, according to his family. He held the rank of private first class when he died and has been posthumously promoted to specialist.
