Shots Fired at Norwalk Cab Passenger

Reports of shots fired just before noon Tuesday in South Norwalk led police to a damaged taxi and a man they believe was the target of gunmen. "Officers were able to locate a taxi that had a fare in it, a male passenger, that might have been the intended victim," said Sgt. Andre Velez . "The taxi suffered a single gunshot damage, what I would describe as a glancing damage from a projectile. That's preliminary at this time." The uninjured man was taken into protective custody.

Police were using information from the taxi driver in the investigation. Several police cars were parked for more than a half-hour at 43 Chestnut St., two buildings away from Columbus Magnet School. Velez said officers were pursuing leads. The building is part of the King Kennedy housing complex.

Police received two reports of shots fired just before noon. One caller said three to four shots were fired at Lexington and Ely avenues. Another reported the shots at Ely and Austin Street. "We believe at this time that the shooting took place at the intersection of Ely and Laura, which is the bridge that crosses over the Metro-North tracks," Velez said.

He declined to release any identifying information on the intended victim, including his age. He also would not say which cab company was involved. Police were searching for a dark-colored Honda or Nissan.

A reader of The Daily Norwalk said on Facebook that he had heard the shots at 11:25 a.m. at Laura Street and Austin Street. Miguel Cruz, who lists his full-time employer as South Norwalk Electric and Water, said he was up in a bucket truck when he heard three shots in rapid succession.

"When I looked up the hill I saw a car speeding away," he said. "All I got was a glimpse of the tail lights. I was working up in my bucket truck and my view was blocked by the trees.

"The vehicle fled southeast on Austin Street towards Ely Ave. Police responded to the area immediately.

"I do not know who or what was the target of the shooting."

Cruz said he had been repairing a broken crossarm on Lexington Avenue and Austin Street. "From what I saw it appeared the shooting occurred at the intersection of Austin Street and Laura Street," he said. "I believe the cab fled and ended up on Chestnut Street."
