Senate Candidates To Debate in Fairfield County

WESTON, Conn. – The first debate between Democratic Senate candidates U.S. Rep. Christopher Murphy and former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz will be held Wednesday, May 23, at 7 p.m. at Westport Town Hall. The debate is sponsored by the Weston Democratic Committee and the Fairfield County Democrats.

Murphy won the endorsement of Connecticut Democrats at the state party convention last Saturday, receiving 76 percent of the 1,823 delegates. Bysiewicz won 24 percent, which enables her to continue her campaign and challenge Murphy in an Aug. 14 primary.

Murphy, who represents Connecticut’s Fifth District, is a third term congressman who serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Bysiewicz has introduced an Accountability Plan supporting economic reform to help the middle class, ending the war in Afghanistan and reducing our troop levels in Europe and Japan.

The debate is free and open to the public. After the debate, refreshments will be served and residents will have a chance to talk with the candidates.

“I am eager to hear them discuss many topics, including the economy, health care and foreign affairs as well as local issues,” said Barbara Reynolds, chairman of the Weston Democratic Town Committee.

The debate will be moderated by Gary Rose, a professor at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield and author of 10 books on politics and government, including “Connecticut’s Fourth Congressional District: History, Politics and the Maverick Tradition.”

Westport Town Hall is located at 110 Myrtle Ave.
