MILFORD, Conn. — A massive search was underway Friday afternoon for a 28-year-old man who went missing after a wave swept him off a sandbar and into Long Island Sound at Silver Sands State Park in Milford, police said.

At about 1 p.m., Milford Police received a call about two swimmers in distress off Charles Island at the beach. One swimmer was located, brought back to shore and is safe, police said.

The other swimmer has not been located by 3 p.m., police said. A multi-agency water rescue effort was underway, involving Eagle 3 helicopter, Stratford Police, jet skis, U.S. Coast Guard, Milford police  and Milford Fire Department divers in the water, police said via Facebook.
