Rolling Car Puts Norwalk Family at Risk

NORWALK, Conn. – An unoccupied car rolled down a hill, through a stockade fence and onto a steep embankment Thursday night, with just trees preventing it from plunging onto a home below. Norwalk police evacuated the home for fear that the car would break loose and slam into the building.

The owner of the 2008 Audi A4, who lives at 5 Hill Court, said he thought he had put the car in park when he came home at about 9:15 p.m. He even went into the back seat to get something, and the car did not move.

But as he walked into the house, the car began to roll. It proceeded in a curving path, hit a rock and turned around, continuing down the hill with its front end toward him as it crashed through the fence.

Trees kept it from falling the entire 30 feet as it hung in a vertical position. A wrecker from Nat's Garage pulled the car off the cliff and onto the pavement above. A flatbed trailer from Luke's Auto Body was used to remove it from the property.

The family in the home below was allowed back in after about an hour, Norwalk Fire Department Lt. Chris King said. The fire department stayed on the scene until 10:35 p.m.
