FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – More people rode Metro-North New Haven Line trains in 2012 than the previous year, a new record, according to data released by the rail authority.

Ridership reached a record 38.8 million rides last year, up about 600,000 or nearly 1.5 percent from 2011’s 38.2 million. The increases were first reported by Hearst Newspapers.

The improving economy played a factor in the increase in ridership, which was not significantly affected by Hurricane Sandy in the fall, officials said. Additionally, the continued installation of new trains also contributed to the improvement.

Metro-North operates three rail lines – New Haven, Hudson and Harlem – and combined the trio carried about 83 million riders in 2012, not a record but its second highest total.

Ridership along the MTA’s Long Island Rail Road was also up in 2012, reaching 81.7 million riders, or an increase of just under 1 percent.

Metro-North hopes to build on its ridership increases by adding more trains in the spring and making improvements to its Danbury spur.

Queen I agree the South Norwalk train station is very unsafe most with any common sense use Westport or Darien Or East Norwalk

Why are you posting inaccurate information about the safety of the train station in South Norwalk. Are you trying to get innocent people injured. Anyone actually lives in Norwalk knows that is a very unsafe areas should be avoided at all costs

Jim T:

Aren't you that guy that posts bad stuff about the police all the time?
No one drives out of Norwalk to use the train station. No one has problems at any train stations, just you. If you lived in Norwalk, you would know that.
Thousands of people ride from SONO every day.
Unsafe area, avoid at any cost, LOL! That was pretty funny actually. Thanks for the laugh, bro

Jim T:

Sorry, when I lived on Richards avenue, I DID drive to Darien. Why? Because it was closer!
Still laughing at your post, thanks again bro!

I have seen shady characters in the Norwalk train station, but its safe to use. No one I know has ever had any problems at the train station. If you get to the train early, you get a seat. They tend to run 5 mins behind at 7 30 am.
I feel its safer now than it was years ago!

This is great news everyone is reporting this, have we lost the ability to ask about crime rate? It has increased on the line more so in Norwalk the facts are out there lets read about what the MTA police has done in the last year.Requests for help from Norwalk police and our own security in place at the train station leaves a whole lot of questions. This week the Norwalk parking security could not contain or stop a crime from happening while they watched it,maybe a regular Norwalk police officer on duty would of been more in order. Why are we subbing out security in the South Norwalk train station they seem to be useless last couple of calls. It seems the Parking Auth has taken more in charge leadership on things that should of never gone private.

Security at our tain stations in Norwalk should be the Norwalk police and the MTA police responsibility why has it been given to LAZ?

This camera system in Norwalk has not been working for months anyone know why its not working?

Makes you wonder why tell us some things and not the other things that invlove safety at the train station.

Last cab driver shot only a few weeks ago was at the train station how much more does the public need to know before questions are asked?

Pony Tail Steve:

Well if you use common sense you can avoid crime at the train station. The area is a ghetto around there, enter from the front and stay in well lit areas

Queen ffctguitar:

I just took the train into Greenwich Village it was fabulous

Pony Tail Steve:

I was told they cannot add more as some of the stations do not have room on the platform. Notice some of the stops, you have to walk past the last 3 cars to open?
Would be nice to add trains or run them more frequently. The MTA has NO CLUE how to spend the $ it has FYI.

Niikk:

Pony Tail Steve
Please provide proof of your statement
"I was told they cannot add more as some of the stations do not have room on the platform"
thank You

judyg:

Then why don't they add more trains so it is not so dang crowded all the time!!?!?!!? Commuting on MetroNorth has become an increasingly unpleasant experience in the past couple of years. The new cars have horrible seating arrangements. I can't wait until I retire in a couple of years just because the commute has become so awful!
